What it is
The check-up costs nothing. The dentist looks at each tooth for decay, cracks and worn fillings, measures the gums, checks the tongue, cheeks and palate, and takes X-rays only where they will change the decision. You leave with a written plan and every price on it, and a fee applies only if you go ahead with treatment.
Cleaning removes what brushing cannot. Plaque that stays on the teeth hardens into calculus (tartar) within days, and once hard it can only be removed with instruments. A scale and polish takes it off above and just below the gum line and polishes away surface staining from tea, coffee and smoking. Deep teeth cleaning is AED 79 per session, and the dentist will say whether one session is enough or the gums need a course.
What the evidence says about routine cleaning — honestly
For healthy adults who already attend regularly, a scheduled scale and polish adds less than you might expect. A Cochrane review of 1,711 regular attenders without severe gum disease found that six- or twelve-monthly cleaning made little or no difference to gingivitis over two to three years, and only a small difference to calculus.1
That is not the situation most people booking a deep clean are in. Where gums bleed, calculus has built up or gum disease has started, removing the deposits is the first step of treatment, not a routine — and the check-up is what tells the two apart. How often should I have a check-up?
Every six months suits most people. The dentist may suggest more often if you have gum disease, a high decay risk, braces or aligners, or dry mouth from medication — and less often if two consecutive visits find nothing to do. The interval is set for you rather than by the calendar.
Does cleaning hurt?
On healthy gums it feels like a vibrating scratch and is over in minutes. Inflamed gums can be tender and may bleed during cleaning; that settles within a day or two and is a reason to have it done rather than to avoid it. Tell the dentist if your teeth are sensitive — the ultrasonic scaler can be turned down, and a numbing gel is available.
