Do I need a referral to see an Internal Medicine specialist?

What is the difference between a GP and an Internal Medicine specialist?
A GP covers everyday care for all ages. An Internal Medicine specialist trains further in adult conditions, and is the right choice when something is long-term, hard to control, or involves several problems interacting — diabetes with blood pressure and cholesterol, for example.
Which health check includes an Internal Medicine review?
Smart Total Health 360° (AED 329) and Smart Extra Health 360° (AED 449). Both are reviewed with you by the Internal Medicine specialist rather than handed over as numbers — the Extra 360° adds the widest panel, with hormones, iron and an H. pylori test.
Do you see hormone and endocrine problems?
Yes. Thyroid conditions, raised prolactin, cortisol and adrenal questions, low testosterone and the metabolic side of PCOS are assessed by the specialist, with the blood tests done on site.
What should I do about a positive ANA test?
See a specialist rather than worrying about the number. A low-level positive ANA is common in healthy people; it is read with your symptoms and followed by more specific tests such as anti-dsDNA and ENA antibodies where needed.
Can you manage diabetes that is difficult to control?
Yes, including insulin and GLP-1 regimens, and interpreting continuous glucose monitor data. Medication is adjusted against your readings and how you are actually living, not against the target alone.
Can you review medication prescribed in another country?
Yes. Bring the packets or a list, and your doctor will reconcile them with what is available in the UAE, check for interactions, and tell you what needs changing and what does not.
How often will I need to come back?
That depends on the condition and how settled it is. A newly diagnosed or unstable problem is usually reviewed every one to three months, then less often once it is under control.
