What the Estradiol test measures

Estradiol is the main form of oestrogen, made by the ovaries in women and in small amounts in men. In women its level changes through the cycle, so the day of the cycle decides how it is read; for fertility it is usually taken on day 2 or 3.

What the result tells you

With FSH on day 2 or 3

Shows how the ovaries are responding; a high estradiol can make a normal-looking FSH misleading.

Low in women

Can point to low ovarian activity, very low body weight, heavy exercise or menopause.

In men

Raised levels can explain breast tissue growth or low libido, and are read with testosterone.

How to prepare

Fasting
Not required
Best time
Women: usually day 2 or 3 of the cycle, unless the doctor says otherwise
Worth knowing
Tell the doctor about any hormonal contraception or HRT.

What can move the result

A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

The day of the cycle
Hormonal contraception or HRT
Pregnancy
Body weight
