BLOOD TEST · SMART CARE POLYCLINIC, DEIRA
Hepatitis B Test explained
Checks for current hepatitis B infection; part of every pregnancy's first blood tests.
Order it on its own, or build your own blood test profile — 4 or more tests save up to 30–50%.
What the Hepatitis B Test measures
HBsAg is a protein on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. A positive result means the virus is present now, whether recently caught or long-standing. In pregnancy it matters because the baby can be protected at birth with vaccination.
What the result tells you
If it's positive
Further tests show how active the infection is and whether treatment is needed, with referral to a liver specialist.
In pregnancy
The baby receives a vaccine, and sometimes antibodies, at birth, which prevents most infections.
If it's negative
There is no current infection; a separate test shows whether you are immune from vaccination.
How to prepare
- Fasting
- Not required
- Best time

What can move the result
A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

Commonly: a very recent infection, before the test turns positive; recent hepatitis B vaccination, briefly. A single result is not a diagnosis. Values are read against the laboratory's own reference range and alongside your history, your symptoms and the rest of the panel — which is why every package includes a doctor to go through them with you.
