What the hs-CRP test measures

The same protein as CRP, measured far more precisely so that the small, persistent rises linked to hardening of the arteries can be seen. It adds to a heart-risk assessment rather than replacing cholesterol and blood pressure.

What the result tells you

Persistently raised

Low-grade inflammation of the blood vessels adds to heart and stroke risk, especially when cholesterol, blood sugar or blood pressure are also borderline.

A single high result

A cold or a minor injury pushes it up for a week or two, so an unexpected result is usually repeated once you are well.

Why it helps

It can tip the balance when deciding whether risk factors need treatment now or can be managed with lifestyle changes first.

How to prepare

Fasting
Not required
Best time
Any time of day, when you are well
Worth knowing
Best taken at least two weeks after a cold or infection.

What can move the result

A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

Any recent infection or injury
Smoking
Excess weight
Lack of exercise
Statins and anti-inflammatory medicines, which lower it
