BLOOD TEST · SMART CARE POLYCLINIC, DEIRA
TIBC explained
Shows how much iron the blood could carry; with iron and ferritin it confirms iron deficiency.
Order it on its own, or build your own blood test profile — 4 or more tests save up to 30–50%.
What the TIBC test measures
TIBC measures transferrin, the protein that carries iron in the blood. When iron runs low the body makes more transferrin, so TIBC rises, which is why it is read with iron and ferritin rather than on its own.
What the result tells you
High, with low iron and ferritin
The classic pattern of iron deficiency, the most common reason for tiredness in women.
Low
Seen with long-term inflammation or illness, where iron is present but locked away.
Transferrin saturation
Iron divided by TIBC gives the saturation, which helps tell deficiency from overload.
How to prepare
- Fasting
- Preferably 8 to 12 hours
- Best time
- Morning
- Avoid before
- Iron tablets for 24 hours before
What can move the result
A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

Commonly: iron supplements; pregnancy and hormonal contraception, which raise it; inflammation and liver disease, which lower it. A single result is not a diagnosis. Values are read against the laboratory's own reference range and alongside your history, your symptoms and the rest of the panel — which is why every package includes a doctor to go through them with you.
