BLOOD TEST · SMART CARE POLYCLINIC, DEIRA
Triglycerides explained
A separate blood fat that responds fast to sugar, alcohol and weight.
What the Triglycerides test measures
The main form in which fat is carried and stored. Unlike cholesterol the level moves quickly — it rises within hours of a meal, which is why fasting is asked for. A markedly raised level is treated as its own risk, separately from cholesterol.1
Reported as part of Lipid Profile.
What the result tells you
Part of a cluster
A raised level usually appears alongside a low HDL, raised blood sugar and weight around the middle. The doctor reads the cluster, not the number.
The most responsive number on the panel
Cutting sugar, refined carbohydrate and alcohol moves it within weeks — a genuine way to see whether a change is being made.
Very high is a different concern
At extreme levels the risk is inflammation of the pancreas rather than heart disease, and that is treated urgently rather than with lifestyle advice.
It distorts the LDL beside it
Because LDL is usually calculated from this figure, a high triglyceride makes the LDL on the same report less reliable.
How to prepare
- Fasting
- 9–12 hours — this is the measurement fasting matters most for
- Best time
- Morning, so the fast falls overnight
- Avoid before
- Alcohol for 24 hours
- Worth knowing
- Alcohol alone can raise triglycerides sharply, independently of food.
What can move the result
A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

A markedly raised level is treated as its own risk, separately from cholesterol. Part of a cluster: A raised level usually appears alongside a low HDL, raised blood sugar and weight around the middle. The doctor reads the cluster, not the number.
Fasting: 9–12 hours — this is the measurement fasting matters most for. Best time: Morning, so the fast falls overnight. Avoid beforehand: Alcohol for 24 hours. Alcohol alone can raise triglycerides sharply, independently of food.
Commonly: sugar and refined carbohydrate; alcohol in the day or two before; not fasting, or an incomplete fast; weight and inactivity; poorly controlled diabetes and an underactive thyroid. A single result is not a diagnosis. Values are read against the laboratory's own reference range and alongside your history, your symptoms and the rest of the panel — which is why every package includes a doctor to go through them with you.
