BLOOD TEST · SMART CARE POLYCLINIC, DEIRA
Urea explained
A second waste product the kidneys clear, useful mainly for how it compares with creatinine.
What the Urea test measures
The end product of protein breakdown. The liver makes it, the kidneys remove it. Unlike creatinine it is affected by a good deal more than kidney function — dehydration, a high-protein diet, bleeding into the gut and some medicines all move it, which is why kidney function is not judged on urea alone.1
Reported as part of Kidney Function & Electrolytes.
What the result tells you
Urea up, creatinine barely moved
Usually dehydration rather than kidney damage — the kidney reabsorbs more water, and more urea with it.
Both rising together
Points more towards the kidney itself, and is read against the eGFR.
A disproportionate rise can mean bleeding
Digested blood in the upper gut acts as a large protein meal. With black stools or unexplained anaemia, this changes what happens next.
If it's low
Usually unremarkable — a low-protein diet, pregnancy or overhydration. Persistently low can reflect reduced liver production.
How to prepare
- Fasting
- Not needed for urea itself
- Best time
- Any time, usually with the rest of the panel
- Avoid before
- A very high-protein meal the day before
- Worth knowing
- Be normally hydrated — this is the measurement most distorted by arriving thirsty.
What can move the result
A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

Commonly: dehydration, which raises it more than creatinine; a high-protein diet; bleeding in the upper digestive tract; reduced kidney function; liver disease and pregnancy, which lower it. A single result is not a diagnosis. Values are read against the laboratory's own reference range and alongside your history, your symptoms and the rest of the panel — which is why every package includes a doctor to go through them with you.
