Vitamin C explained
Checks vitamin C, needed for healing, gums, iron absorption and immunity.
What the Vitamin C test measures
Vitamin C cannot be made by the body and comes from fruit and vegetables. It helps absorb iron and keep skin and gums healthy, so a low level can sit behind tiredness, easy bruising or slow healing.
What the result tells you
If it's low
Usually reflects diet; it is corrected with food or a short course of supplements.
With low iron
Low vitamin C makes iron harder to absorb, so the two are corrected together.
Very low
Rare, but causes bleeding gums and easy bruising and is treated promptly.
How to prepare
- Fasting
- Preferably overnight
- Best time
- Morning
- Avoid before
- Vitamin C supplements for 24 hours before
What can move the result
A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

Fasting: Preferably overnight. Best time: Morning. Avoid beforehand: Vitamin C supplements for 24 hours before.
Commonly: recent supplements or fruit; smoking, which lowers it; pregnancy; how quickly the sample reaches the lab. A single result is not a diagnosis. Values are read against the laboratory's own reference range and alongside your history, your symptoms and the rest of the panel — which is why every package includes a doctor to go through them with you.
