Antenatal Care in Dubai: Your Pregnancy, Trimester by Trimester

Antenatal care is the series of visits, scans and blood tests that check on you and the baby through pregnancy, timed so that each is done when it gives the most information. At Smart Care Polyclinic in Deira, it is provided by female obstetrician-gynaecologists with ultrasound in the room, and arranged as trimester packages or a full-pregnancy package so nothing is missed and the cost is known in advance.

For: every pregnancy, from a positive test to delivery planning

Visits: roughly monthly, then fortnightly, then weekly

Price: packages from the first trimester; full pregnancy AED 3,499

Three trimesters, three purposes: the first dates the pregnancy and screens, the second examines the baby's anatomy, the third follows growth and plans the birth.

What it is

The first trimester sets the calendar. A scan between 11 and 14 weeks confirms the pregnancy is in the womb, counts the babies, dates the pregnancy from the baby's length, and measures the nuchal translucency that, with blood tests, gives a chance of chromosomal conditions.1 Booking blood tests check your blood group, iron, immunity and infections that matter in pregnancy, and the visit is where blood pressure, weight and any risk factors are recorded.

The second trimester is the anomaly scan. Between about 18 and 22 weeks the baby is examined structure by structure — brain, face, spine, heart, kidneys, limbs — with the placenta and fluid checked at the same time.2 Blood sugar screening for gestational diabetes falls here too.

The third trimester is about growth and readiness. Growth scans estimate the baby's weight and check the fluid and blood flow, blood pressure and urine are watched for pre-eclampsia, the baby's position is confirmed, and delivery is planned with the hospital of your choice. Each scan and test is explained on its own page under pregnancy scans, with the guidelines it follows.

Who provides it

Two female specialist obstetrician-gynaecologists, with ultrasound performed in the consultation rather than booked separately, so what is seen is discussed with you immediately. Consultations are AED 150 outside a package; the packages bundle the visits, scans and tests for each trimester at a lower total.

Delivery

The birth takes place in hospital. Smart Care is an outpatient clinic, so antenatal care here runs alongside the hospital where you deliver, and the gynaecologist hands over your records. Dr Rasheeda J. Bhavnagarwala performs normal deliveries and caesarean sections in hospital. Delivery packages with Dr Rasheeda J. Bhavnagarwala — normal delivery AED 7,000, C-section AED 12,500 — are paid to the clinic in instalments: 25% down in the first trimester, then AED 820 a month.

Questions patients ask

As soon as you have a positive test. The first visit confirms the pregnancy, starts folic acid and iron if not already taken, and books the dating scan for 11 to 14 weeks, which is the one window that cannot be revisited.

This guide is general information, not advice about you. Symptoms overlap between conditions, and the gynaecologist's history, examination and ultrasound are what decide your assessment and treatment.
