Contraception Advice and Fitting in Dubai
The right contraception depends on your health, your plans, how much you want to think about it, and what you have tried before. A female gynaecologist at Smart Care Polyclinic in Deira goes through the options against your medical history, fits coils and implants in the clinic, and follows up. The consultation is for married couples in line with UAE regulations.

What it is
Methods fall into groups. Long-acting reversible methods — the hormonal coil, the copper coil and the implant — work for three to ten years with nothing to remember and are the most effective in real life. Short-acting hormonal methods — the combined pill, the progestogen-only pill, the injection, the patch and the ring — depend on regular use. Barrier methods protect against infection as well. Permanent methods are discussed and referred.
Safety depends on your health. The 2024 US Medical Eligibility Criteria set out, condition by condition, which methods can be used safely — with migraine with aura, high blood pressure, a history of clots, smoking over thirty-five, breastfeeding and many others — and that is the framework the gynaecologist uses when advising you.1
Coil and implant fitting
Both are fitted in the clinic under local anaesthetic or with pain relief, after a consultation that checks suitability and, for a coil, an ultrasound of the womb. A coil fitting takes ten to fifteen minutes and causes cramping for a day or two; an implant is placed under the skin of the upper arm in a few minutes. Follow-up checks position and any bleeding changes, which usually settle within months. Removal is straightforward and fertility returns promptly.
Periods and contraception
Many methods change bleeding, and some of that change is the point. The hormonal coil and some pills reduce heavy periods substantially and are used for that reason alone; the copper coil can make periods heavier; the implant and injection often make bleeding irregular at first. The gynaecologist will tell you what to expect from each before you choose.

Questions patients ask
The implant and the coils, because they do not depend on remembering anything; typical-use failure rates are under one in a hundred a year. Pills are highly effective when taken correctly and less so in real life.
Yes. Both the hormonal and copper coils are suitable for women who have not been pregnant; fitting can be a little more uncomfortable, and pain relief is offered.
Yes, on prescription and by fitting at licensed clinics, for married couples under UAE regulations. The consultation is confidential.
This guide is general information, not advice about you. Symptoms overlap between conditions, and the gynaecologist's history, examination and ultrasound are what decide your assessment and treatment.
