Hair loss is one of the most common concerns raised in consultations here, and the water gets blamed almost every time. Hard water can affect how hair feels and behaves, but it is rarely the whole explanation for genuine shedding.
The more productive question is which kind of hair loss you have, because the treatments differ completely.
The patterns that matter
Diffuse shedding across the whole scalp, often noticed in the shower or on the pillow, frequently points at telogen effluvium — a temporary shift of many follicles into the resting phase, triggered by illness, surgery, a major stressor, rapid weight loss, childbirth or a nutritional deficiency, typically two to three months earlier.
Gradual thinning in a pattern — receding at the temples, thinning at the crown in men, widening of the parting in women — suggests androgenetic hair loss, which is progressive and responds to different treatment.
Patchy, well-defined bald areas are a different process again and need medical assessment rather than a cosmetic one.
The blood tests worth doing
Several correctable deficiencies present as hair loss, and they are common in this population. Testing before treating is what separates a plan from a guess.
- Ferritin — iron stores, frequently low in women with heavy periods
- Vitamin D — widely deficient in the UAE despite the sunshine
- Thyroid function — both underactive and overactive thyroid cause shedding
- Full blood count, and vitamin B12
- Hormonal screening where there are other signs of PCOS
Where PRP and mesotherapy fit
Platelet-rich plasma involves drawing your own blood, concentrating the platelets and injecting them into the scalp; hair mesotherapy delivers a vitamin and micronutrient formulation into the same layer. Both are offered at Smart Aesthetics as a course rather than a single session — hair PRP is AED 199 per session, with a four-session offer.
They are reasonable adjuncts where the underlying cause has been addressed. They are not a substitute for correcting an iron deficiency or a thyroid problem, and any clinic offering them without checking those first is skipping the part that matters.
What to do about the water
A shower filter and a gentler shampoo will improve how your hair feels and reduce breakage. Neither will stop genuine shedding from a medical cause, which is the point of separating the two.
Common questions
Does hard water in Dubai cause hair loss?
Hard water can affect hair texture and contribute to breakage, but it rarely explains genuine shedding on its own. Diffuse shedding usually has a medical or nutritional trigger worth identifying.
Which blood tests should I have for hair loss?
Ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid function, a full blood count and B12 are the usual starting point, with hormonal tests added where there are other signs. Our hair loss panel covers the common ones.
Does PRP work for hair loss?
It can help as part of a plan, particularly where the underlying cause has been identified and addressed. It is given as a course rather than a single session, and it is not a replacement for correcting a deficiency or a thyroid problem.
