Laser Hair Removal: Why It Takes Six Sessions, Not One

The laser only affects hair that is actively growing. At any moment, most of yours is not.

Almost every disappointing laser experience traces back to the same misunderstanding: that a session treats an area. It treats the hairs in that area which happen to be in the growth phase that day.

Understanding why turns an apparently poor result into an expected one.

The growth cycle explains everything

Hair follicles cycle through three phases: active growth, a transitional phase, and rest. Laser energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair and conducted to the follicle — which only works when the hair is connected to the follicle, in the growth phase.

At any given time only a proportion of the follicles in an area are in that phase. Treating repeatedly, spaced weeks apart, catches different follicles each time. That is why a course is required and why the sessions are spaced rather than done back to back.

What a course involves

Laser hair removal at Smart Aesthetics is priced per area, from AED 50 per session, and every area is also available as a 3- or 6-session course. Smaller areas such as the upper lip cost less than larger ones; the full area list is quoted at consultation.

Most people see meaningful reduction over a course, with maintenance sessions afterwards. Complete permanent removal is not what the technology promises, and anyone promising it is overreaching.

What affects the result

Hair colour matters most: the laser targets pigment, so dark hair on lighter skin responds most predictably. Modern devices treat a much wider range of skin tones safely than earlier generations, but fair, grey or red hair responds poorly regardless of device because there is little pigment to absorb the energy.

Hormonal factors, including PCOS, drive hair growth and can affect results — which is one reason a medical assessment beforehand is useful rather than decorative.

  • Do not pluck, wax or thread between sessions — the follicle needs to be there
  • Shaving between sessions is fine and expected
  • Avoid sun exposure and self-tan before treatment
  • Expect a gradual reduction rather than a sudden clearance

Is it painful?

Most people describe a snapping sensation with a brief warmth. Sensitive areas are more uncomfortable than others, and modern cooling makes a substantial difference. Sessions on small areas take minutes.

Common questions

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

Most areas need a course rather than a single session, commonly three to six, because the laser only affects follicles in the active growth phase. Sessions are spaced weeks apart to catch different follicles each time.

How much is laser hair removal in Dubai?

At Smart Aesthetics in Deira it is priced per area from AED 50 per session, with 3- and 6-session courses available for every area. The full area list is quoted at consultation.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It produces long-term reduction rather than guaranteed permanent removal, and maintenance sessions are usually needed. Results depend heavily on hair colour and on hormonal factors.
