Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Cholesterol Checks: GP in Dubai

Three numbers explain most of the preventable heart attacks and strokes, and all three are silent until they are not. A GP visit at Smart Care Polyclinic in Deira measures blood pressure properly, tests blood sugar and HbA1c, and checks the lipid profile, then tells you what the numbers mean for you under the current guidelines and what, if anything, to do. Bloods are drawn on site and most come back the same day.

For: everyone from the thirties; earlier with family history or weight

Takes: a consultation plus a blood draw

Price: consultation AED 70 · tests or a package priced separately

Three numbers behind most preventable heart attacks and strokes: blood pressure, HbA1c and LDL cholesterol. All three are silent, and all three are checked in one visit.

What it is

Blood pressure is measured seated, rested, with the right cuff, and on more than one occasion before a diagnosis is made, because a single high reading in a clinic often is not high blood pressure. The 2025 American guideline sets out how it should be measured and what the readings mean.1 Where readings are borderline, home monitoring for a week is more informative than a third clinic reading.

Diabetes and prediabetes are diagnosed on HbA1c or glucose thresholds defined by the American Diabetes Association standard, and a result in the prediabetes range is the most useful one to find, because it is the stage at which weight, diet and activity change the outcome.2

Cholesterol is read as a risk, not a number. The lipid profile — total, LDL, HDL and triglycerides — is interpreted alongside age, blood pressure, smoking and diabetes to estimate cardiovascular risk, which is what decides whether treatment is worthwhile; the current joint guideline is the framework used.3 A high LDL in a young non-smoker and the same LDL in a diabetic smoker are different conversations.

The packages

The diabetic panel, the cardiac panel and the Smart Essential, Total and Extra health checks bundle these tests with the others a GP would want alongside them, at a set price lower than the tests individually. The package pages list every test. Results are explained by the GP, and abnormal ones lead to a plan rather than a printout.

Follow-up

Normal results: repeat in one to three years depending on age and risk. Borderline results: lifestyle changes with a repeat in three to six months. Abnormal results: treatment started or a referral to the internal medicine specialist for the whole picture, particularly where more than one number is out.

The consultation, and what follows from it

Questions patients ask

The lipid profile is priced on its test page, and is included in the cardiac panel and the health check packages at a lower bundled price. The GP consultation to interpret it is AED 70.

This guide is general information, not advice about you. A GP's assessment depends on your history and examination, which is why the consultation exists.
