Minor Gynaecological Procedures in Dubai
Some gynaecological treatment can be done in a clinic room under local anaesthetic in a short appointment, without a hospital admission: fitting and removing coils and implants, taking a sample of the womb lining, removing a cervical polyp, draining a Bartholin's cyst, treating minor vulval lesions. At Smart Care Polyclinic in Deira these are done by a female gynaecologist after a consultation that explains what is involved and quotes the cost.
For: procedures that need a room and local anaesthetic, not a theatre
Takes: 10-40 minutes
Price: quoted at the consultation
What it is
Contraceptive fittings and removals — hormonal and copper coils, and the implant — are the commonest, and are covered in the contraception guide. An endometrial biopsy takes a small sample of the womb lining through the cervix in a minute or two, to investigate abnormal bleeding, particularly after forty or after the menopause; it cramps briefly and needs no anaesthetic for most women. A cervical polyp, a small benign growth found at examination or screening, is twisted off in a moment and sent for histology.
A Bartholin's cyst or abscess — a painful swelling at the entrance of the vagina — is drained under local anaesthetic, with a technique that reduces recurrence. Minor vulval lesions such as skin tags and warts are treated in the same way as elsewhere on the skin.
Everything removed is sent for examination, and everything is explained first. The gynaecologist describes the procedure, what it will feel like, what to expect afterwards and what the alternatives are, and quotes the cost, before it is booked. Procedures that need general anaesthesia or a theatre — hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, fibroid or ovarian surgery — take place in hospital, with the assessment and imaging done here first. Dr Rasheeda J. Bhavnagarwala performs obstetric and gynaecological surgery in hospital.
Aftercare
Mild cramping and light bleeding for a day or two are expected after most of these procedures. Simple painkillers cover it. Nothing in the vagina for the period the gynaecologist advises. Heavy bleeding, fever or worsening pain are reasons to call.

Questions patients ask
Most of these procedures cause brief cramping rather than pain, and local anaesthetic or pain relief is used where it helps. The gynaecologist tells you what to expect before starting, and stops if you ask.
Not for most clinic procedures under local anaesthetic; you can drive afterwards. Bring someone if you would find it reassuring.
This guide is general information, not advice about you. Symptoms overlap between conditions, and the gynaecologist's history, examination and ultrasound are what decide your assessment and treatment.
