Botox and dermal fillers are mentioned in the same breath so often that most people assume they are variations on a theme. They are not. They address different problems by different mechanisms, and a great deal of disappointment comes from having the wrong one.
The distinction is easier than the marketing suggests.
The difference in one line each
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the movement of a specific muscle. Lines that appear when you make an expression — forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet — are caused by that movement, so relaxing the muscle softens them.
Dermal fillers add volume. Hollows, folds and loss of definition are structural, so they need something placed rather than something relaxed.
What each is used for
At Smart Aesthetics, Botox is priced per area — AED 650 for one area, AED 1,100 for two. Fillers are priced per millilitre, from AED 599.
- Botox — forehead lines, frown lines between the brows, crow's feet, and some jaw and sweating indications
- Fillers — lips, cheeks, jawline definition, and folds that persist at rest
- Skin boosters — a third category again, improving skin quality rather than lines or volume
Why the assessment matters more than the product
The commonest reason results look wrong is not the product. It is treating the wrong thing, or treating in isolation — filling a fold without addressing why it formed, or relaxing a muscle that was holding something up.
A consultation should include being told when a treatment will not achieve what you are picturing. That is the most valuable thing a good practitioner says.
How long each lasts
Botox generally lasts three to four months, varying with the area treated, the dose and individual metabolism. Fillers last considerably longer — commonly six to eighteen months depending on the product and the site.
Neither is permanent, and both are reversible in different senses: Botox simply wears off, and hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if needed.
Common questions
What is the difference between Botox and fillers?
Botox temporarily relaxes the muscle causing a line that appears with movement. Fillers add volume where it has been lost. They treat different problems, and the right choice depends on whether your concern is movement or structure.
Which do I need for lines on my forehead?
Lines that deepen when you raise your brows and soften at rest are movement lines, usually treated with Botox. Lines visible when your face is completely still may need a different approach, which is what the consultation determines.
How long do the results last?
Botox typically three to four months; fillers commonly six to eighteen months depending on the product and area. Both wear off gradually rather than stopping suddenly.
