What is Botox?
Botox is a purified botulinum toxin type A that temporarily reduces the contraction of specific muscles. Where a line is caused by repeated movement — frowning, squinting, raising the brows — relaxing that muscle softens the line and slows its progression.
The evidence here is strong and consistent. A network meta-analysis of randomised trials found every botulinum toxin type A formulation studied was far superior to placebo for frown lines, with no significant difference between them in treatment-related side effects.1
Lines etched into the skin at rest will improve less, because the muscle is no longer the only thing holding them. A doctor should tell you which of yours are which before you book, not after.
How it works
Small, precisely placed injections are made into the target muscles using a very fine needle. The effect begins at three to five days, peaks at around two weeks and wears off gradually as nerve signalling returns, usually over three to four months. Dosage and placement are chosen for your anatomy and how strong your muscles actually are, which is why a review appointment at two weeks is part of the treatment rather than an upsell.

Expected results
Movement starts to soften from day three to five, with the full effect at around two weeks. Most people return every three to four months. Treated conservatively, expression is retained — a completely frozen look is a dosing choice, not an inevitability, and it is worth saying at the consultation if you want to avoid it.
Who it may suit
Commonly considered by people whose expression lines have started to show at rest, and by those wanting to slow their progression. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with certain neuromuscular conditions — which is one of the reasons the medical history is taken properly.
Side effects & aftercare
Individual responses vary — the team explains everything before treatment and is one message away after it.
- Small raised marks at the injection points settle within fifteen to thirty minutes.
- Stay upright for four hours and avoid rubbing or massaging the area that day.
- No sauna, steam room or strenuous exercise for twenty-four hours.
- Rarely, a treated muscle relaxes more than intended and a brow or lid can sit lower; this is temporary, and the clinic should see you if it happens.
Frequently asked questions
That is a matter of dose and placement. Tell your doctor at the consultation that you want to keep movement — a conservative dose softens the line while leaving expression intact, and it can always be topped up at the two-week review.
Typically three to four months. Strong muscles, high metabolism and regular intense exercise can shorten it. The first few treatments sometimes wear off a little faster than later ones.
It wears off. There is no reversal agent, but the effect is temporary by design and fully resolves as nerve signalling returns.
Botulinum toxin has been used cosmetically for decades and has a well-documented safety profile in trained hands at cosmetic doses. Risk comes from technique and from unassessed medical history, which is why every treatment here follows a doctor consultation.
