What it is
The first job is to stop the pain and find the cause. The dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray if needed, and does what will get you comfortable that day: dressing an exposed nerve, smoothing a sharp edge, re-cementing a crown, placing a temporary filling, draining an abscess, or starting a root canal. A definitive treatment plan follows once the emergency is over.

What to do before you get here
Toothache: take an over-the-counter painkiller as directed, avoid very hot, cold or sweet food, and do not put aspirin on the gum — it burns. Broken tooth: keep any piece, rinse gently, and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or orthodontic wax. Lost crown: keep it; it can often be re-cemented the same day. Swelling with fever or difficulty swallowing: that is an infection spreading, and it needs to be seen today — if you cannot reach us, go to an emergency department.

Minutes matter. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, do not scrub it. If you can, put it straight back in the socket and bite gently on a cloth; if not, keep it in milk and come immediately. Baby teeth are not re-implanted — bring the child in to check the socket.
