What the Phosphate test measures

What the result tells you
It rises as kidneys decline
Often before symptoms appear, which is why it adds context to the creatinine rather than repeating it.

The two move in opposite directions in most conditions affecting either. High phosphate with low calcium points somewhere different from both being high.
If it's low
Less common. Usually vitamin D deficiency, sustained alcohol use, or long-term antacids.
One situation to watch
Phosphate can fall sharply in the days after resuming food following prolonged undernutrition, and needs monitoring then.
