Vitamin D explained
Measures your vitamin D level — deficiency is very common in the UAE despite the sunshine.
What the Vitamin D test measures
Made in the skin from sunlight and taken in from a few foods. It controls how much calcium the body absorbs, which is why it governs bone strength, and it affects muscle and immune function too. The Endocrine Society sets out how a deficiency is confirmed and corrected1, and guidance written for the UAE specifically addresses who is worth testing here — deficiency is common enough locally to justify it.2
What the result tells you
Why deficiency is common here
Not a shortage of sun but avoidance of it — indoor work, air-conditioned days, covering clothing, sunscreen, and the hottest hours being the ones people stay out of.
The symptoms are vague
Tiredness, aching muscles, low mood, bone or back pain. They overlap with many other things, which is why it is measured rather than guessed at.
It is straightforward to correct
A supplement course, then a recheck rather than an assumption that it worked.
Too much is not harmless
Very high levels from over-supplementing cause problems of their own, which is the other reason for measuring rather than simply taking more.
How to prepare
- Fasting
- Not needed
- Best time
- Any time of day
What can move the result
A result outside the usual range does not on its own mean something is wrong. These are the everyday explanations a doctor considers first.

Commonly: how much direct sunlight reaches your skin; darker skin, which needs longer exposure for the same amount; covering clothing and daily sunscreen; being pregnant or breastfeeding; conditions affecting absorption from the gut. A single result is not a diagnosis. Values are read against the laboratory's own reference range and alongside your history, your symptoms and the rest of the panel — which is why every package includes a doctor to go through them with you.
