What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid: tiny particles suspended in liquid and injected under the skin. It is not a filler, and understanding that difference is the whole point of the treatment. A hyaluronic acid filler is a gel that occupies space — what you see on the day is the gel. Sculptra occupies no space. The particles dissolve over the following months, and as they do they prompt your own fibroblasts to lay down new collagen. The volume you end up with is your own tissue.

That has two consequences worth being told before you pay, not after.

The fullness you see on the day is water, and it will go. The product is reconstituted in liquid and that liquid is absorbed within a few days. People who are not warned about this reliably think the treatment has failed in week one. It has not started yet.

It cannot be dissolved. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed with hyaluronidase if the result is not what you wanted; Sculptra cannot. That is not a reason to avoid it, but it is a reason the assessment and the injector's experience matter more here than with a reversible product.

It works on volume and firmness across an area. It is not the treatment for sharpening one feature or reshaping a lip — a filler does that, and a doctor should say so rather than sell you the more expensive option.

How it works

The product is reconstituted well in advance and injected across the area being treated, usually with a blunt cannula, at a depth chosen for the site. You will be given clear instructions to massage the treated areas at home over the following days, and following them matters. Treatment is a course rather than a single visit — commonly around three sessions spaced roughly a month apart, though how many you need depends on how much volume has been lost and is decided with you at the consultation.

Who performs this

Every plan starts with a consultation. Which clinician you see depends on availability and on what the assessment finds.

Expected results

Nothing meaningful is visible in the first few weeks, and the swelling on the day is not the result. Change builds over two to three months as collagen is laid down, and the honest assessment is taken around three months after your final session, not before. Study follow-up has reported results sustained up to around two years, though this varies considerably between people and maintenance is usually part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

Who it may suit

Ideal for

  • Gradual volume loss across the cheeks or temples
  • A subtle, gradual change nobody can pin to a date
  • Longer-lasting improvement than hyaluronic acid filler
  • Overall firmness and structure, rather than one feature

Not suitable if

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • A history of keloid or nodular scarring
  • An active infection or inflammation at the treatment site
  • Needing a visible change before a particular date

Sculptra results timeline

Typical timings — everyone responds a little differently, and your doctor will tailor the plan.

  1. On the day

Swelling makes the area look fuller. This is fluid, not the result.

  2. Days 2–5

The swelling settles and the area looks as it did before — expected, and not a sign it has failed.

  3. Weeks 4–6

The next session. Most plans are two or three sessions, four to six weeks apart.

  4. Months 2–3

Volume returns gradually as your own collagen is laid down.

  5. 3 months after the last session

The honest point to judge the result.

  6. Up to about 2 years

How long results have lasted in studies — it varies, and a top-up is usually part of the plan.

Side effects & aftercare

Individual responses vary — the team explains everything before treatment and is one message away after it.

  • Massage the treated areas exactly as you are shown — the usual rule is five minutes, five times a day, for five days. This is part of the treatment, not an optional extra.
  • A wrapped ice pack for short spells on the first day helps the swelling.
  • Swelling and bruising are common for a day or two; the fullness you see on the day is fluid and settles.
  • Avoid sauna, steam and heavy exercise for twenty-four hours.
  • Contact the clinic if you notice a firm lump developing weeks or months later, or any increasing pain, redness or skin colour change.

Frequently asked questions

A filler is a gel that takes up space, so you see the result immediately and it can be dissolved. Sculptra takes up no space — it prompts your own collagen over months, and cannot be dissolved. Different treatments for different problems, and a doctor should tell you which one your face actually needs.
